Sacraments

  • Baptism

    INFANT BAPTISM

The Sacrament of Baptism is the gateway to all the sacraments. It is the responsibility of parents and godparents to model their faith by word and example, to help the newly baptized infant’s faith development and growth towards Christian maturity.

    Prerequisites for Infant Baptism:

The child has not celebrated his/her seventh birthday, at least one parent/guardian should be a practicing, active Catholic, and the parents/guardians and godparents attend a Baptism class.

    • Classes are held the third Saturday of the month at 3 p.m. (except December). Contact the office to sing up ahead of time as there is pre-work prior to attending. • Reconciliation

    RECONCILIATION, (PENANCE, FIRST CONFESSION)

6-week course for children (typically grades 2-5) and their parents. Diocesan policy requires children's participation in a faith formation program at least one year prior to beginning Reconciliation classes. Contact Jennifer Lehrman, 719-599-5031 x110, for more information.

These classes are separate from the regular Faith Formation classes. Preparation for Reconciliation takes place in the Fall. Reconciliation classes are held on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 p.m. until 7:45 p.m. NOTE: At least one parent/guardian is required to attend the first three (3) classes.

A Child is eligible to make the sacrament of Reconciliation if:

he/she is a baptized Catholic or has made a Profession of Faith, a parent makes the commitment to help prepare the child (teaching the required prayers and helping with any assigned homework), the child has successfully completed a Diocesan approved Faith Formation Program AT LEAST the previous year before the year of sacramental preparation, the child is in second grade or above, the child has successfully met the minimum attendance requirements in the regular Faith Formation class or is in the process of completing the Home Study Program, the child can distinguish right from wrong. A parent may teach the Reconciliation lessons at home. However, a parent must still attend the first three (3) meetings on Wednesday evenings. Additionally, the family must schedule a follow-up parent/child interview with the Coordinator of Elementary Faith Formation or the Director of Faith Formation to determine if the child is adequately prepared to make his/her First Reconciliation. If a child received First Eucharist in another diocese without receiving the sacrament of Reconciliation, the child may enroll in the Reconciliation class this year.

  • Eucharist

First Eucharist: A seven-week course for children (typically grades 2-5) and their parents. Diocesan policy requires classes to begin no earlier than four months after completion of Reconciliation classes and First Penance/Reconciliation. Contact Jennifer Lehrman, 719-599-5031 x110, for more information.

These classes are separate from the regular Faith Formation classes. Preparation for First Eucharist takes place in the Spring on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 p.m. until 7:45 p.m. Due to the need to “practice” for First Eucharist, the Home Study option is not available for this class. Please contact the Coordinator of Elementary Faith Formation if there is an extreme circumstance that requires special consideration about attending these classes. NOTE: At least one parent is required to attend the first three (3) classes.

He should summon the presbyters (priests) of the church, and they should pray over him and anoint with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven” (James 5:14-15).
